This year the theme is Heroes and Heroines: Citizens of the World Past and Present.

A Message From Dr. Jim Baker, Professor, Department of History and Geography

One of the major goals of social studies education is to promote, through knowledge, the desire for students to become concerned, engaged citizens to counter the cynical view, based on ignorance, that ordinary citizens cannot make a difference. Throughout history up to the present, people individually or in concert have risked life and liberty to benefit the human race. These acts of bravery are what we want our students to study. UCO is interested in encouraging students to see the advantages of a participatory democracy.  As in the past around 200 fifth through eighth graders will compete for awards in essays and projects centered around a theme that stresses commitment and citizenship. This year the theme is Heroes and Heroines: Citizens of the World Past and Present.
