CGC Information

            The Centre for Global Competency at the University of Central Oklahoma represents an alliance between the offices of the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs and the office of the Vice President of Student Affairs dedicated to providing UCO students a comprehensive, multi-cultural experience. The Centre provides opportunities to students that enhance the core values of the UCO educational experience: Character, Civility, and Community. By fostering a transformational learning experience through academic achievement, global experiences, and personal reflection, the Centre for Global Competency endeavors to empower students to understand, appreciate, and personally thrive in a global world.

            Global competency is the process of personal transformation resulting from immersion in a someone else’s way of life, confronting preconceived notions, engaging new ideas, and emerging with newfound cultural freedom, self-awareness, and appreciation for diversity. In an increasingly diverse world, a recent survey showed that 25% of Americans placed in global assignments were failing (McDonald), at great cost to the individual and the corporation. Certification from the Centre for Global Competency at the University of Central Oklahoma shows employers that students who are globally competent are flexible, self-reliant, motivated, team-oriented, open-minded, creative thinkers who have great regard for all people and are ready to compete, at home or abroad. The CGC certification prepares students to achieve their goals and makes them attractive candidates to all employers.

Mission Statement

The Centre for Global Competency exists to instill the values and the skills of the “Globally Competent Individual” in students at the University of Central Oklahoma so that they may become better prepared, more culturally aware, and more confident to become effective leaders in a multicultural world.

The Centre for Global Competency unites Academic Affairs and Student Affairs at the University of Central Oklahoma with the Global Community in the pursuit of intellectual transformation, quality leadership, and a commitment to service.

Vision Statement

The Centre for Global Competency will emerge as a model for student, faculty, and community relations in an effort to cultivate Global Competency and multicultural awareness to be exemplified by prepared leaders for Oklahoma, the United States, and throughout the world.
