Senate Considering Two Bills
The Faculty Senate is currently
considering two bills. The first (FSP
01), which was referred to
the Senate Budget Committee, calls on UCO to create a faculty development account for every full-time faculty
member. Under the proposal, every full-time faculty
member will be given a small professional development budget
each year to support development in their teaching,
scholarly activity, or service.
The Proposal states:
"The Faculty Senate requests that the
University establish and fund Individual Faculty Development
Accounts for every full-time faculty member employed by the
University. Faculty would be free to use the funds in their
account to support any faculty development activity
including (but not limited to) the purchase of books,
journals, other periodicals, travel, and equipment (both
hardware and software). To ensure that the funds are being
used to support professional development, faculty must
receive approval from their Chairs (Chairs must receive
approval from their Dean) for each expenditure."
The second bill (FSR
02), which is being
considered by the Personnel Policies Committee, calls on UCO
to create a committee to review health insurance policies
for the families of UCO faculty and staff. The Resolution
states:
"The Faculty Senate requests that the
University establish a committee composed of faculty and
staff, including individuals from Human Resources
responsible for setting up current health insurance
programs, for the review of health insurance policies for
UCO faculty and staff and their spouses and dependent
children. Health insurance costs for dependents, including
spouses and children under the age of 25, are believed to be
excessively expensive which creates a burden for employees
wishing to ensure that their family has the best possible
health care. Further, current health insurance plan options
are one-size-fits-all plans that provide few options or
incentives for faculty and other UCO employees. The proposal
seeks to review and compare current employee health plans
and health plan options, including dependent health
insurance costs with those of other regent-sponsored health
insurance providers to ensure that university employees
receive the best possible health insurance and dependent
health care benefits at the lowest possible cost."
The Senate welcomes any and all comments on these two bills.
