Meeting minutes Sigma Phi Sigma Funeral Service Department University of Central Oklahoma
March 3, 2008:
February
20, 2008
The
meeting began at 7:30 a.m. There
were approximately 10-12 people in attendance.
Members can only miss 3 meetings in order to retain their “active”
status. They are asked to attend
the meetings and volunteer projects since half the semester is already over!
Dr. Sokoll came by to enlist volunteers for the convention April 21-23 in
Tulsa, Oklahoma. People are needed
to work about an hour each at the UCO booth.
We discussed a possible trip to Houston, Texas to visit the National
Museum of Funeral History and Restland Funeral Home and Cemetery in Dallas,
Texas this spring. Our main concern
for getting the trip going is to find a reasonably priced means of
transportation. Vendors will likely be called to see about donations or
advertising sponsorships. We also
talked about the sales of our hooded sweatshirts.
Everyone is asked to tell anyone they know (especially at their place of
work) about them in order to get them sold so we can make a profit.
Dues need to be paid as soon as possible.
Cost is $10 per semester ~ what a bargain!
Finally, our Parliamentarian/Senate member has stepped down.
Members were told of the responsibilities for this office and asked to
consider holding the position. An
election will be at our next meeting. The
meeting adjourned at 7:55am.
February
6, 2008
The
meeting began at 7:30 a.m. with a guest speaker from Carter Healthcare/Hospice.
Adam Colvin is the coordinator for volunteer services with Carter.
He explained the hospice philosophy of caring for the terminally ill and
informed us of numerous volunteer opportunities as well as giving us some witty
insight into the Hospice vs. Funeral care.
He also explained the need for many of the hospice patients to have
visitors ~ people who will listen, run errands or just spend time with them to
help ease their mind and give them some enjoyable moments.
Even though the patient is under hospice care, they are still very alive
and need to be treated as such! We
had a great response to not only the meeting but also to the volunteer
opportunities mentioned by signing up with Carter Hospice before the meeting
adjourned. It really helps to get
involved in out-of-class activities. Employers
like to see community involvement on résumé’s when looking for potential
employees. The meeting adjourned at
8:30am.
Meeting on October 24, 2007
This meeting began at 7:30 a.m. with discussion of our new design for hooded sweatshirts. It will have a grim reaper along side a hearse and was designed by one of our own students, Jennie Washington. The design is being taken to a graphic designer to see if it can be recreated in a computer program for the t-shirt designer.
We also discussed the decals. There has been some confusion in getting the printed but should be available by next meeting.
The construction of a funeral service department banners is in full swing. These will hang proudly in the halls of the Coyner building for hopefully, many, many years. The committee in charge of them is even having them laminated to protect against wear and tear. They should be complete by the end of next month.
Possible fundraisers for next semester include food days at the Coyner building, faculty kissing a pig or getting a pie in the face, selling candy bars and cokes and even possibly a garage sale across the street in the church parking lot.
Possible community projects for next semester include inner-city help (a member of sigma phi sigma is already involved in this), cleaning Broncho Lake and volunteering at a cemetery in Ninnekah with general up-keep.
Movie night participation was not very good last month so it has been taken off the books for the month of November. May start again in the spring but will be discussed in further detail at a later date.
The upcoming food drive is scheduled for November 5-16th. This is our community project for the semester so we want it to be a great turnout. Please get with your families and other organizations to bring in all you can. Our goal is set at 500 cans. This would require the Food Bank to pick up the donation.
DUES, DUES, DUES are DUE, DUE, DUE!!!
The meeting concluded at 7:50am.
Minutes of sigma phi sigma meeting October 10, 2007
We began the meeting at 7:30 a.m. with the discussion of having the monthly movie night on October 24th. This is a great time to get together and enjoy a scary/humorous movie with fellow classmates and relax a bit. We ask for everyone to bring a movie of their choice and a snack to share.
We also discussed the upcoming food drive for November 5-15th. Non-perishable items, especially canned goods, are greatly appreciated. If we can get 500 cans the Food Bank will pick up the donations. That will be our set goal.
The decals for the cars are supposed to be ready on Monday. They will be $5 and can be bought from any officer.
We are working on a design for the hoodies. If anyone is interested in helping with that committee, please let Keri know and she can get you in touch with the right person.
Dues are still due for some. Those members that have not paid for the Fall semester will be sent an email asking if they would like to continue their membership.
And we discussed the Pierce Chemical trip in Dallas, Texas which was October 16th. We had 26 students attend…the largest number of students to-date. Mr. Randy Emmert of Pierce Chemicals was our guide. It was an interesting trip. There were a few mishaps in getting there but overall it was quite an experience. The C.E.O. of the company, Mr. John Firestone, took us on a tour of the building. We saw the area where all the stationary and memorial books are made, as well as the production area for the embalming chemicals. After the tour of Pierce Chemicals we went to the Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science for lunch and a tour of their facilities. One exciting note is that they have a prep room where not only do they perform embalming for anatomical donations but they also test out new embalming fluids. We arrived back at UCO about 6 p.m.
The meeting adjourned just before 8:00 am.
September 26, 2007
Our third meeting of the semester began at 7:30 a.m.
The date for our potluck picnic in the park is set for October 12, 2007 from 5-8 pm at Mitch Park in Edmond. The park is located on Covell between Kelly & Santa Fe. Everyone in the Funeral Service Department is invited as well as their families. Sigma Phi Sigma will be providing the meat (BBQ) and everyone is asked to bring a side dish to share with others. If you’re interested in being on the advertising committee, contact Kyla Betche at kbetche@ucok.edu
We are planning a trip to Pierce Chemical Company for October 16th our alternate dates for the trip are November 6th or 7th. This will be a FREE fun trip and a chance to see some interesting things! A sign-up sheet will be available next week as Pierce is in need of a definite head count for transportation purposes.
We put together a committee to help design a banner which will hang in the halls of the funeral service department. If you’re interested in being a part of the banner committee, contact Ken Brown at kbrown41@ucok.edu
There is also talk of getting hoodies made for the upcoming cooler weather. The design is pending. If interested in being a part of the design committee, contact Rosetta Abbott at rsrenco@ucok.edu
Car decals are ready to be printed. They will be sold for $5 each. More info on when they will arrive to come.
The haunted house idea will likely be changed and a food drive will take its place as time is already running out for Halloween. The Food Bank of Oklahoma will be contacted to see how we can accomplish a productive food drive before the end of the fall semester. The nursing department will likely be asked to join this service project.
Other possible service projects include cleaning up Broncho lake and trimming back/cleaning up a cemetery in Ninnekah, Oklahoma.
At the end of the meeting we took a group photo in the selection room along with photos of the officers. The pictures are already available on the funeral service website.
Again thank you all for your participation lets keep it up
and stay involved! Staying involved in activities outside of class will give
you a step up in the eyes of future employers!!
