Department of English

English (M.A.)
with emphasis in Composition and Rhetoric, 20th & 21st Century Studies (Literature or Film), Creative Writing, Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL), and Traditional Studies

The Master of Arts in English is a flexible yet comprehensive program of graduate study fitted to the individual student’s needs. The program provides this flexibility with five separate majors from which the student may choose.

Creative Writing (M.F.A.)
The University of Central Oklahoma—home to the first comprehensive creative writing program in Oklahoma—now offers an M.F.A. in Creative Writing, beginning Fall 2008.

UCO has been offering coursework in creative writing for almost forty years and has well established B.A. and M.A. programs in the field. Over the years, notable authors including James Dickey, Paul Engle, and Horton Foote have helped to shape the curriculum and to guide student writers at UCO.

Department of History and Geography

History (M.A.)
with emphasis in General History, Museum Studies and Social Studies Teaching

The Master of Arts in History is designed for those who wish to further their knowledge of history and the historian’s craft, prepare for doctoral programs, or pursue professional goals through the Social Studies Teaching or Museum Studies majors. Course offerings reflect the Department of History and Geography’s commitment to developing an awareness and understanding of diverse cultures, contemporary global trends, and global interdependence.

Department of Political Science

Political Science (M.A.)
with emphasis in General Political Science, International Affairs and Public Affairs

The Master of Arts in Political Science is a flexible, yet comprehensive program designed to provide students with advanced preparation in political science and, depending on the program, in related fields in the social sciences. Majors are offered in International Affairs, Public Administration, and General Political Science. The General and International Affairs majors can be taken during the day or evening, while the Public Administration major is expressly designed as an evening program for working adults.

Department of Sociology, Criminal Justustice, & Substance Abuse Studies

Criminal Justice Management and Administration (M.A.)
The Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Management and Administration program is designed to meet Oklahoma’s needs for graduate education in the area of criminal justice management and administration. The curriculum has been developed to provide opportunities to individuals interested in acquiring specialized skills and knowledge within the criminal justice field. The Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Management and Administration curriculum further encourages the development of the students critical, analytical, and creative abilities related to the subject area. This is further accomplished by the enhancement of research skills, class work, out of class projects, and field studies. The Criminal Justice Management and Administration program has a non thesis and thesis option. Students who opt for the non thesis must complete 32 hours of academic work. The credit hour requirements are reduced to 30 hours for those students who elect the thesis option. For students that were accepted into the program summer of 2004 and thereafter will be required to complete 36 hours regardless of the thesis or non thesis option. If you plan on pursuing a doctorate degree, it is strongly recommended that you complete a Master’s thesis.
