    DECEMBER, 2005

    Liz Kiser, Volunteer Center Coordinator, received a $300 Month of Action Campus Compact grant for Alternative Spring Break. The grant will be used to offset expenses of taking 5-7 students to Louisiana for a week to help with the hurricane clean-up effort.

     

    June, 2006

    Kim Fields, Assistant Director of Disability Support Services, was a guest on the College Connection radio show with Ben Hardcastle to discuss Disability Support Services on June 15.

     
    APRIL, 2007

    The Student Health Center received a two year youth suicide prevention grant - this grant is to be used as a collaborative effort with the Student Counseling Center. Jo McGuffin is the Director of the Student Health Center, James Allen (manager of the grant) is the Student Health Center's Assistant Director, Health Promotion and Programs, and Bruce Lochner is the Director of the Student Counseling Center.
     
    OCTOBER, 2007


    The Division of Student Affairs was awarded a grant from the Department of Justice that will fund programs to Prevent Violence Against Women. A position will be created at UCO to fill the duties and responsibilities of the program and the training involved.

     
         
     

    MAY, 2006 

    Dr. Bruce Lochner, Director of the Counseling Center, facilitated a presentation entitled, “What’s New in College Mental Health on Your Campus?” at the Oklahoma College Student Personnel Association.  The 2006 Spring Conference was hosted at the University of Oklahoma.

    Kim Fields, Assistant Director of Disability Support Services, facilitated a presentation with Dr. Bruce Lochner entitled, “Disability 101: You Are Not Alone” at the Oklahoma College Student Personnel Association.

    Brooke Wilson, Campus Activities Coordinator for Campus Life, also made a presentation at the OCSPA.  She facilitated “Facebook: Communication in the 21st Century.”
     
       
    JULY, 2006

    Kim Fields, Assistant Director of Disability Support Services, presented a session on the "Transition to College" and another session on "Leadership" at the National AHEAD Conference on July 21.
     
       
    NOVEMBER, 2006

    Rita Conger, Psychologist for the UCO Counseling Center, presented "Loving and Leaving the Culture of Graduate School" at the OU Graduate Awards Luncheon on November 3, 2006.

     
       
    JANUARY, 2007

    Dr. Jo McGuffin, Director of the Student Health Center, was published in the January/February American College Health Association newsletter, College Health In Action. The article was entitled: "Religious Diversity, Fact or Fiction."

    APRIL, 2007

    Jordan Smith, Coordinator of Campus Activities and Events and Brooke Wilson, Assistant Director of Campus Activities and Events presented at the annual UCO Character Conference. The presentation, What Did You Say? focused on the history of generations of Americans in the work force today.

    Dr. Jo McGuffin, Director of the Student Health Center, has been appointed to serve on the Ethics Committee of the American College Health Association. Other institutions represented on the committee are University of Wisconsin - Madison; University of Kansas, Loyola University of Chicago, and Florida State University.

    Josh Overocker, Director of Housing, and Emily Griffin Overocker, Assistant Director of Campus Life, have been appointed to 2005-2006 NASPA IV-West Advisory Board.

    Norman Nieves, Assistant Director of Residence Life, was elected advisor to the Oklahoma Residence Hall Association.

    Brooke Wilson, Campus Activities Coordinator for Campus Life, has been appointed to serve as the four-year regional representative on the Board of the Oklahoma College Student Personnel Association (OCSPA).

    NOVEMBER, 2006


    Governor Brad Henry has appointed Dr. Kathryn Gage, UCO Vice President for Student Affairs, to the Oklahoma Community Service Commission. Dr. Gage will serve a three-year term as Commissioner.

    The Director of UCO's International Student Services, Dr. Dennis Dunham, received an award for outstanding service to international education at the regional meeting of National Association of Foreign Student Administration (NAFSA) November 8 in Arkansas.

    UCO's Testing Services Department was ranked among the Top 60 testing centers for College Level Exam Programs in the nation

     
       
    APRIL, 2007

    Dr. Jo McGuffin, Director of the Student Health Center has been appointed to co-chair the Oklahoma Traumatic Neurological Injury Advisory Council. Kim Fields, Assistant Director of Disability Support Services has also been appointed to serve on this council.

    Dr. Jo McGuffin, Director of the Student Health Center, has been recently designated a board certified Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE). She has been a member of ACHE for many years and has past experiences in various leadership roles in hospital administration and healthcare management, as well as publications related to healthcare leadership.

    The Student Health Center recently purchased a laboratory system that allows the center to perform many of the blood tests in the health center rather than sending the specimens out to an off-campus laboratory. This new service provides greater efficiency and timeliness for treating patients, and minimizes the out-of- pocket expenses for the student at the time of service. By performing these tests in the health center, the health center has been licensed to be a CLIA - moderately complex lab, rather than a CLIA-waived laboratory.
     
       
    SEPTEMBER, 2007


    Dr. Bruce Lochner, Director of the UCO Student Counseling Center and Assistant VP for Student Affairs, is partnering with the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse to bring the "Prevention Oriented Campus" program to UCO. This program will make us a model institution for teaching students, staff and faculty how to identify students in psychological distress, as a campus violence preventative measure.

     
       
    SEPTEMBER, 2007


    Dr. Bruce Lochner, Director of the UCO Student Counseling Center and Assistant VP for Student Affairs, has been appointed from the Chancellor of Higher Education to serve on a Campus Life Safety and Security committee that is tasked with reviewing college counseling recourses and making recommendations to the Regional University Systems of Oklahoma.
