Individual Counseling

Psychological counseling is not easily described in general statements. It varies depending on the therapist and client and the problems you are experiencing. There are many methods your therapist may use to help you deal with the problems you hope to address.

Students who wish to participate in individual counseling at the SCC must first schedule and attend an intake appointment. If the student and intake therapist agree that individual counseling is an appropriate way to address the student’s presenting problem, the client will be assigned to a counselor. The student and the counselor will work together to decide on how often they will meet. Sessions are usually scheduled for periods of 45 or 50 minutes and may be scheduled weekly, bi-weekly, or even monthly, depending on a number of factors including student and counselor availability, the student’s presenting problem, and limits on number of sessions. It is difficult to determine how many weeks a student may be in counseling. Many students are able to work through their presenting problem in less than six sessions, while some students remain in counseling for the duration of the semester. Students who wish to remain in counseling for more than one semester can discuss their options with their individual counselor.
