The goals of teaching and research are not mutually exclusive ones. Research enhances critical thinking skills and provides hands-on experience for students entering the job market or advanced degree programs. Though historically relegated to graduate programs, the integration of creative activities with classroom activities is gaining recognition for its importance in undergraduate education. The Office of Research & Grants coordinates and administers a variety of opportunities for undergraduate students to be involved in research, creative and scholarly activities, including Research Assistantships, and the RCSA Student Grant Program. The Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities Team (URCAT), is a committee comprised of representatives from across the UCO campus and works closely with members of the UCO Academic Affairs Office with advice and assistance from Dr. Ed Cunliff. (You may contact members of this group for information relating to undergraduate research and creative activities by clicking on college website buttons accessed through this site.) By integrating research and other scholarly activities with teaching, UCO is developing a model for undergraduate education. The campus has been identified as one of five such university models that helped to produce the guidelines for administering undergraduate research by the Council for Undergraduate Research. Indeed, as UCO continues to develop undergraduate research and creative activities, it supports an emerging national trend in higher education. |
