Healthy Campus UCO
Description
Healthy Campus UCO embraces the
philosophy that wellness is an expanded idea of health, not merely
the absence of physical disease.
Healthy Campus UCO utilizes
the Dimensions of Wellness (physical, mental, intellectual,
social, spiritual, and environmental) conceptual framework which
promotes wellness as largely determined by the decisions one makes
to be able to live life fully – with vitality and meaning.
Healthy Campus UCO is a part of the
Healthy People 2010 and
the Healthy
Campus 2010 initiatives. Healthy People 2010 is a set of
national health objectives designed to promote health and prevent
disease. The federal government creates these health objectives
every ten years by working with an alliance of more than 350
national organizations and 250 state health, mental health,
substance abuse, and environmental agencies. Healthy Campus 2010
focuses on the Healthy People 2010 objectives that are relevant to
college campuses.

Task Force
Healthy Campus UCO consists of a
coalition of students, faculty, staff, and community partners that
are working together to create a healthier campus. This coalition
will review and analyze health behavior data from the National
College Health Assessment, and subsequently will design, implement
and evaluate policies and interventions to make the University of
Central Oklahoma a healthier place to live, study and work.
Healthy Campus UCO - a
comprehensive wellness initiative - can have a significant impact on
the health of the nation. According to the American College Health
Association (ACHA), 26% of the people in the United States - 73
million - have completed at least four years of college and are
likely to have received services from college wellness programs.
Over 15.2 million students are pursuing advanced education in the
United States.
Healthy Campus UCO provides the
structure to facilitate a unique opportunity to influence the health
and lifestyle of a substantial proportion of the citizenry now and
